The Lawyer Show: Where Law Meets the Stage
Now in its 22nd year, The Lawyer Show returns with The Addams Family Musical, directed by Touchstone’s Artistic Director Lois Anderson, running May 28–31 at the BMO Theatre Centre in Olympic Village.

Touchstone Theatre’s Lawyer Show is where the worlds of law and theatre collide in spectacular fashion. This high-energy fundraiser features a cast and band of 35+ legal professionals stepping into the spotlight to perform a full-scale musical across four days. With catered receptions, a lively silent auction and more, it’s one of the most unique events on Vancouver’s cultural calendar.

Curious what it’s like to go from the courtroom to the stage? Read on to hear insights from this year’s lawyers and creative team:
Roger Watts, Northpoint Legal - Uncle Fester
Q: What qualities do you feel you bring from your legal work that help you on stage?
A: As a litigator, stage presence is a must. You definitely have to be able to project confidence in what you're saying to a Court; needless to say, that translates directly to the theatrical stage as well. Equally important, however, is remaining receptive to other ideas and embracing a collaborative process, which is in my view a critical element of both the legal and theatrical professions.
Q: Has participating in The Lawyer Show changed how you see your own profession or your colleagues?
A: Immensely. This process continually reminds me that people aren't one-dimensional, and that they have many more sides that as colleagues we typically don't see day-to-day. A prime example is one former castmate who, prior to practicing law, was a professional Shakespearean actor who once showed me a picture of himself onstage with Dame Maggie Smith! The show does a great job of allowing people to exercise and showcase talents like those, and I'm always amazed at the depth and breadth of those abilities.
Kiera Neufeld-Heinrichs, Law Society of BC - Choreographer
Q: Have there been any particular challenges for you moving into this creative, collaborative process? How have you worked through them?
A: I’ve been in the cast for past Lawyer Shows, but this year I’m the choreographer. I miss the camaraderie with the cast and am going to be especially envious when watching the show from the audience instead of being on stage! But I’ve loved being a part in shaping the show and have greatly enjoyed the creative process.
Q: Are there moments when you feel your legal training directly shapes how you approach a script or develop your character?
A: We’re trained to distill huge amounts of complex information into something digestible – we do the same in acting just for a different audience.
Lois Anderson, Touchstone Theatre - Director
Q: What stands out most to you about the work ethic lawyers bring to the rehearsal room?
A: The lawyers come in prepared, are ready to work, throw themselves into the work fully and are playful and creative on the spot. They pivot well when circumstances change and creatively meet rehearsal challenges head-on.
